PARKWAY TREE TRIMMING

Each winter, the Village attends to trimming parkway trees. The trees are pruned to preserve their health and appearance. Village crews trim low branches and a hired outside contractor trims high branches. This year, the contractor is Powell. Low branches will be trimmed from trees south of Elk Grove Boulevard. High branches will be trimmed west of Meacham Road and the area bordered by Texas and California.

Proper tree trimming is a very important annual practice. Trimming is essential for promoting new growth, improving the health and vigor of established trees and to prevent damage to property. The work consists of removing broken, dead, diseased and crossing or interfering limbs, so that decay-producing fungi cannot penetrate the tree. Live limbs are removed to allow sunlight and air to circulate through the canopy of the tree. Narrow-angled or v-shaped crotches, which are weak, are removed when feasible. Live lower limbs which are not part of the upper tree canopy, limbs that have developed faster than others and multiple leaders are removed. Badly misshapen trees will be pruned to restore their characteristic form. Live, low-hanging limbs that are a potential hazard to pedestrian or vehicular traffic will be removed.

Pruner's objective:

  • allow light to penetrate the crown of the tree;
  • eliminate weak forks in tree stems;
  • reduce the weight on support limbs,
  • reduce the possibility of future damage to the tree by high winds or storms;
  • maintain adequate visibility and clearance for vehicle and pedestrian traffic;

Parkway trees are trimmed by professional tree trimmers, according to standard practices adhered to by the industry. All branches are removed promptly after trimming.

After the trees are trimmed they will look quite barren. Oftentimes, a tree looks worse after a trimming. However, history proves correct and leaves Elk Grove with some of the finest looking and healthiest parkway trees in the state. Noting our Tree City USA award earned for the 19th consecutive year proves it.
