Many kinds of wildlife share our neighborhoods, though we seldom see them. Although they usually do not cause any problems, their habitats and those of Village residents sometimes cross.
Most suburban wildlife is wary of humans and will avoid people whenever possible. If you notice aggressive behavior towards you by any wild animal, please call 911.
The following information will minimize conflicts with the most common suburban wildlife - coyotes.- foxes, opossums, raccoons, skunks, squirrels, and woodchucks.
- NEVER FEED ANY WILD ANIMALS. Feeding wild animals may cause them to become aggressive towards people.
- Place all food garbage in covered refuse cans. Make sure lids fit tightly, and are secured with a chain or bungee cord. Wash out recycling bins periodically and rinse out recycled materials.
- Remove all sources of water at night. Cover outdoor ponds with netting.
- Don't leave pet food/water outside at night.
- Don't leave pets (small dogs, cats, etc.) outside at night.
- Properly dispose of all fallen fruit and old vegetables that may be on the ground.
- Don't put food waste into compost piles.
- Cut away any tree limbs close to the house.
- Remove any brushpiles.
- Place bird netting over any fruit or vegetable gardens.
- Cap all chimneys
- Make sure all vent screens and other possible access points to your attic are secure.
- Cover all basement window wells. Seal any entries into crawl spaces and under decks and cement porches/patios.
- Motion-activated lights may work temporarily to keep animals away.
- Cayenne pepper sprinkled on the soil in trouble spots may discourage wild animals from digging.
Remember: interactions between humans and wild animals are inevitable because we all share the same habitats. By following some simple guidelines, you can take precautions to reduce contacts and prevent problems with wild animals.
